:: MONGREL OF LOVE :: |
|
If Joni Mitchell had been a child of the '80s, she might have grown to become the modern-folk guitarist Simon Wilcox, whose cunningly evocative lyrics flow over cool acoustic rhythms. Simon Wilcox's vocal range is both astounding and telling. She doesn't belt out her numbers, but emotes deep, penetrating emotions through alternating growls and softly expressed utterances. The compositions range from the sinewy, graceful lines of "Leather Belt," to the jazz-inflected bounce of "Pigeontoed" and the mystical undertones of "Jealous Angels." Mongrel of Love makes for an inviting sonic dissertation into the heart and mind of a modern songstress, while acknowledging the traditional music forms which came before. ~ Roxanne Blanford, All Music Guide |
