:: SMART FUNCTION:: |
|
From Ottawa XPress: It's not every up-and-coming artist who has the backbone to silence a room full of her own chattering record company reps and labelmates with a threat of violence, as Toronto's Simon Wilcox did a couple of weeks back at an intimate Green Room showcase of her sophomore album, Smart Function. The daughter of Canadian blues guitarist David Wilcox, Wilcox Jr.'s apparent fearlessness extends to the writing: There's a world-weary edge to these guitar and piano propelled meditations on many of life's less savoury bits. There's also a chilled, bluesy, atmospheric, melodic spaciness that might best be described as Sarah McLachlan covering Chris Isaac as produced by Zero 7. And while said production is mostly overdone here, Wilcox's initial intentions poke through the veneer. Watch this grow. |
